Episode 24 - Falls to Viscera - Doom 3

Your mission has always been to podcast, soldier!

Welcome back to the podcast and to the spookiest day of the year, Halloween! Today, we’re going to be talking about Doom 3, an at the time maligned sequel in the Doom franchise that took the classic FPS game and turned it into a classic FPS game, but with horror elements. Specifically, the game had a somewhat controversial flashlight mechanic where it was all but impossible to see in some areas without your flashlight, but using it meant not having a weapon equipped. This forces the player to be much more methodical in their exploration of areas as they make progress and changes the way you engage with the FPS pretty significantly than, say, Doom 2. That said, with over twenty years of history between us and the release of this game, the novelty really makes this game stand out in the franchise as being something new and different and, to our estimation, it actually pulls off what it was going for surprisingly well. We’re going to be talking about why we think the BFG edition update feels poorly thought out, how the weapons in the game do a great job of both mimicking their classic counterparts with updates to make them feel fun to fire, and also filling unique use cases so they don’t feel wasted, and we follow the inspiring journey of the game’s main character from Guy to Doom Guy.

Thank you for joining us this week and we hope you’ve had a suitably spooky month! I have been wanting to revisit Doom 3 for a long time now and, having found the excuse to do it, I am very happy that it turns out that it holds up surprisingly well. Did you play this at the time and were you critical of it, as many people were? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord server. Next time, as we enter November, we’re going to be talking about a brand new release in Queen’s Domain, so we hope you’ll join us for that!
